Heat and Hydration Considerations for Junior and Collegiate Tennis Players
نویسنده
چکیده
HEAT AND HYDRATION MAY NOT BE THE FIRST CONSIDERATIONS OF TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS, COACHES, AND ATHLETES, WHEN PREPARING FOR TENNIS. HOWEVER, HEALTH RISKS AND PERFORMANCE DECREMENTS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH BOTH. THE DEMANDS OF TENNIS, PARTICULARLY DURING MULTIDAY TOURNAMENTS, PREDISPOSE PLAYERS TO INCREASED CORE BODY TEMPERATURE AND LARGE FLUID LOSSES. THIS COMBINATION OF FACTORS CAN LEAD TO DECREASED PERFORMANCE AND EXERTIONAL HEAT ILLNESSES SUCH AS HEAT CRAMPS, HEAT SYNCOPE, OR HEAT EXHAUSTION. BY IDENTIFYING INDIVIDUAL FLUID AND SALT NEEDS, DESIGNING A REPLACEMENT PLAN, AND REDUCING CORE BODY TEMPERATURE DURING AND BETWEEN MATCHES, ATHLETES CAN OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE WHILE MINIMIZING RISK OF HEAT ILLNESS.

Hydration and thermal strain during tennis in the heat
Competitive tennis in the heat can prompt substantial sweat losses and extensive consequent body water and electrolyte deficits, as well as a level of thermal strain that considerably challenges a player's physiology, perception of effort, and on-court well-being and performance. Adequate hydration and optimal performance can be notably difficult to maintain when multiple same-day matches are p...
متن کاملA review of fluid and hydration in competitive tennis.
Hypohydration is known to impair performance and increases the risk of heat injury. Therefore, the consumption of appropriate fluid volumes before, during, and after tennis play is important to maintain physiological homeostasis and performance. Tennis is a sport that typically has points lasting fewer than ten seconds, with short-to-moderate rest periods between each work bout. This sequence i...
متن کاملHydration and temperature in tennis - a practical review.
Competitive tennis is typically played in warm and hot environments. Because hypohydration will impair tennis performance and increases the risk of heat injury, consumption of appropriate fluid levels is necessary to prevent dehydration and enhance performance. The majority of research in this area has focused on continuous aerobic activity - unlike tennis, which has average points lasting less...
متن کاملDoes ovulation affect performance in tennis players?
Background Scientific data on the performance of collegiate female tennis players during the menstrual phases are scarce. Trial design Double-blind, counter-balanced, crossover trials were conducted to examine whether tennis performance was affected during menstruation, with and without dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) supplementation. Methods Ten Division 1 collegiate tennis players...
متن کاملAnalysis of Kinetic Chain Mechanism Affecting Energy Flow in Kick Topspin Tennis Serve in Elite and Amateur Tennis Players
Background. Effective kick-topspin serving in tennis requires power to transfer mechanical energy through a kinematic chain from different parts of the body that is directly related to the kinetics of the joints. Energy flow analysis is a powerful tool for observing the mechanical energy transfer through the body parts. Objectives. This research aimed to study the correlation and predictive ab...
